Hello Everyone, I am posting this message for Koo that I received this afternoon:
We made it! Gabriel and I went to the hospital to ride with Chris in the van to the airport. There was a lot of traffic and I think the car motion made Chris feel sick because for the first time since his injury, Chris threw up. But I had extra clothing so I changed him as soon as we arrived at Heathrow.
Everyone from Air China was expecting us, they upgraded Chris to First Class (because his business seat was on the second floor) and they also had an entire wheelchair team ready to help out, three guys plus a coordinating lady. Thank goodness because my parents and I would have never been able to handle Chris through the cabin. For the rest of the trip it was always one guy then my dad and I doing the transfers...
The flight was smooth and Chris ate both dinner and breakfast. I forgot the most important item for the trip: the syringe which allows me to give Chris water (and meds) through his feeding tube. But Chris handled everything orally - including all of his medication - without a problem... This has a big meaning: Chris is not dependant on this feeding tube any longer. I chatted with his dietician yesterday at the Jacob as she happened to be there and Chris weight is stable. After China we will reassess and if all good this final 200 mls of daily supplementary liquid will be terminated. We all know I can't wait for that day to come...
The crew from Air China also arranged for help upon our arrival in Beijing for the connection to Hangzhou. The aircraft taxied away from the terminal so all passengers must go down the stairs and catch a bus for the transfer. But they had a special elevator for Chris and also one of their representatives helped with the transfers and led us through customs, luggage transfer and security. It all went so smoothly that we had two hours before the connection, so he left us all installed in the business lounge... Then came back to tell us his shift was over but his colleague would come collect us at boarding. Another smooth flight and finally help also at final destination in Hangzhou.
Amazing. I recommend Air China for anyone coming to China for treatment. Off course it's worth noting that I had beforehand emailed, faxed, sent a written letter and phoned to let them know of our situation and what we needed... :) It was worth being a bit of a pain because it all went smoothly!!!!
We are now at the hospital. First impression is that Hangzhou is much cleaner and prettier than Beijing. Chris' room looks like a five star hotel compared to his room at TianTan in Beijing. It’s been decided that I will sleep in the room with him and then after I leave my dad will. Also because we will not employ a 24 hour assistant as we feel the input at time is not huge. We had a problem with the assistant today as he refused to work with Chris unless two assistants were hired. I told him we spent 3 months with only one assistant and a family member. I thought he had bad attitude so tomorrow the agency will try to find someone else.
Ok, so that's the download of our first day. Chris is completely exhausted. Gabriel refused to go to the hotel with my parents and he is playing around in the room... They will start blood tests tomorrow.
I'm typing this on my blackberry but hope I can get internet access tomorrow to keep everyone informed.
Thanks for praying for Chris.
